What’s the best free coloring app to use with the Apple Pencil and iPad?

You’ve seen the videos. You know the ones – artists who color and sketch beautiful artwork on their iPads. They tap, swirl, and drag their Apple pencil across screens, creating gorgeous layers and effects. Adult coloring is mesmerizing, especially adult digital coloring.

You want to join in – you want to add your coloring pages to your Instagram account, and be part of the broader digital artist community. And you have a question:

Is there a coloring app for the iPad?

The short answer? Yes. Yes there are coloring book apps for your iPad that will allow you to make gorgeous digital paintings. We may be a little (ok, a lot), biased, but we truly believe that the Pigment Coloring app is the best adult coloring app for your iPad. Here are some coloring apps with free and subscription options for your iPad:

Pigment: 5,000+ coloring pages, import & color your own photo capabilities, and intuitive tools that simulate a real coloring experience. The Pigment Gallery allows you to easily share, comment, follow and find inspiration in the coloring pages of the community. Challenges and prompts provide additional inspiration. The most realistic digital coloring book experience. Free & Subscription versions available.

Adult Coloring Book: This coloring app has pages designed to look like mini coloring books. It has some daily options for free coloring and a subscription option for full access.

Recolor: This coloring book app has 27 free pages, but to get higher quality images and gradient color options, you need to subscribe.

Color Therapy
: Cool drawings, fun coloring palette options – there are free options and you can buy pages or color palettes piecemeal, or upgrade to Pro for a fee.

Is the Pigment Coloring App Free?

Pigment is a freemium coloring app which means you can download and use its basic capabilities for free. You can also do a free 7-day trial which allows you to get a sense of the premium tools and massive collection of coloring pages. (Like massive. Like you can color one page/day for 13 and a half years and still have some more to go.)

Is Pigment a Color by Numbers Coloring App?

Pigment is a coloring book app for your iPad, and has capabilities for both newbies and more advanced colorists. If you want a “color by number” vibe, use the “Automatic” mode which is the mode your app will be in when you start it. This allows you to color your picture smoothly&easily without going outside the lines.

Switching to freehand mode allows you to have a more controlled, more advanced digital coloring experience.

What are Pigment’s Coloring Tools?

Pigment’s coloring tools allow you to color with ease!

  • Relax and color using simple tap-to-fill tools.

  • Color with a variety of fills. Metallic, bloom, fade and more.

  • Easily add dimension using the airbrush or marker brushes.

  • Multiple undos make creative experimentation stress-free!

Can You Turn Pictures into Coloring Pages with Pigment?

Yep! Our import tool makes it easy (like, so easy) to import a picture and immediately turn it into grayscale for coloring. Create digital artwork of your pet, your significant other, your mom – these make great sentimental gifts. (They are perfect for people who “already have everything.”

Pigment Coloring App Reviews

Honestly? Don’t take our word for it. Try it for yourself. The download is free. If you want to try the premium version, it’s free for a week. (And after that is $9.99/month; cheaper than a movie ticket!)

Come see why idiva describes Pigment as “the closest to real coloring you can possibly get,” imore lists Pigment as the most realistic coloring experience, and diycandy says “This adult coloring app is truly amazing. Unlike any of the other apps, you can choose brushes that allow you to *really* color.”

Or, as Pigment user usharwell5 puts it: “I have been a long-time Pigment Premium user, since 2015. I have seen many different additions through the years and this app beats EVERY other coloring app out there. One of the others actually let you color and use your own brain. The other are basically tap and fill. I was never a good artist, but I have learned so much from this app and the Pigment Community. I think the gallery is so much a part of the whole experience.”

What’s the best free coloring app for the Apple Pencil?

Pigment. Absolutely. Even the free version goes far beyond what other coloring book apps are providing. Move beyond apps that are tap-to-fill, limited coloring page collections, rare updates – you deserve a coloring app that creates an intuitive and realistic coloring experience.

“Tidying your physical space allows you to tend to your psychological space.”

-Marie Kondo.

An organized life. Such a simple concept in theory: tidy rooms, on-time arrivals, planned meals. And yet, in the swirl of modern demands – work, childcare, exercise, hobbies – it’s easy to forget to put the book back on the shelf, leave some traffic buffer for appointments, prep ingredients for healthy snacks.

Today we encourage you to use your digital journal to tidy both your internal and external spaces. Our Family Planning spread is perfect for organizing your family’s schedule, our Household Planning spread helps you stay on top of chores, and our Organizing Your Thoughts spread encourages self-reflection.

An organized life means calm & ordered spaces, both mental and physical. Using digital planning to structure your organizational needs, whether sorting through piles of clothes or thoughts, is a way to create calm from chaos, order from overwhelm.

Happy Journaling!

“The deadline is your muse.”

– Regina Galieva, Pigment Featured Artist

A Self-Taught Artist

Regina Galieva, Pigment Digital Coloring’s featured artist, is a digital dreamer who has been “creating since the moment I can remember myself.” A self-taught illustrator, Galieva lives in Kazan, Russia, where she finds inspiration from her surroundings: the city, nature, people and light.

Finding Inspiration

Galieva doesn’t believe in waiting for inspiration. Instead, she says, it’s important to “put effort and time into it” and let the deadline be your muse. She also finds inspiration in other artists, including Anna Desnitskaya’s sketches and Ilya Kazakov’s style.

Her Favorite Artwork

Currently, her favorite personal piece is a triptych depicting a traveler wandering through magical worlds.

Galieva’s Pigment Collection

Galieva’s illustrations for Pigment are glimpses into other lives; each of her characters is inviting you to help them tell their story.

Love her stuff? Color her digital artwork on Pigment today! (Or explore thousands of other coloring pages with different themes and styles…sky’s the limit.)

Why Children’s Arts Education is Crucial, and What We’re Doing About it

Pixite is proud to support P.S. ARTS, a nonprofit that brings arts education to underserved schools in California.

Art matters. At Pixite, our goal is to spark and support natural creativity. Our apps provide tools and inspiration for dabbling, discovering and designing. In light of our desire to facilitate artistic experiences, we are excited to announce that we will be annually donating 1% of our profits to organizations that support the arts.

Pixite is proud to give to PS ARTS, a nonprofit that is changing lives through arts programming in public schools. Art education adds richness and depth to students’ (and adults’!) understanding of the world. Through creating, students learn to process, reflect, and explore their surroundings; they learn to see things through the eyes of others, and they discover joy in the strength and beauty of their imaginations.

What PS ARTS is doing is powerful. It’s important. We are proud to be part of it in a small way.

About PS ARTS

“P.S. ARTS was founded in 1991 to mitigate the near elimination of arts programs in California public schools. The scarcity of arts education is a matter of social justice, as inequitable access to the arts diminishes college and career prospects and contributes to an ever-widening opportunity gap between affluent and marginalized communities. One in six jobs in California is connected to the creative industry. By exposing students to the arts, P.S. ARTS provides access to the creative economy as well as pathways to careers in the arts.” – PS ARTS

P.S. ARTS’ mission is to advance equity and opportunity for children and youth by providing arts education in public schools and communities. Since our founding, P.S. ARTS has grown from serving 285 students in one school to serving 25,000 students and community members in 50+ schools throughout Central and Southern California.

About Pixite

At Pixite, our goal is to support and spark natural creativity.

In a world of assembly lines, constant media, and cheap labor, we think it’s important to take time to create. We believe that everyone is creative, and that it’s important to practice and express this side of ourselves. It’s a bit like exercising – you know it’s good for you, you feel better after you do it, but sometimes it’s hard to just show up. And, unlike exercise, the benefit of creating is not necessarily a physical result, which makes it even easier to ignore or push aside.

The reality is: creating is essential to your personal wellbeing. To use your imagination, to make something where there was nothing, to immerse yourself in a personally meaningful project: these are distinct, and beautiful, expressions of humanity.

Our apps are designed to help you make time and space for creating. They are mobile so that you can create anywhere – at a doctor’s office, on a train, in nature – and they are intuitive so that you don’t have to spend a ton of time trying to navigate tools. Frankly, they are also a lot of fun.

So: carve out some time for creating today. Exercise your brain, express your humanness, and enjoy the process.
